Worldwide availability of EC2 instance types

The promise sounds tempting; with AWS, you can roll out your infrastructure in 33 regions worldwide. Indeed, it is an eye-opening moment when rolling out the same infrastructure into multiple regions to serve users in different parts of the world. However, a few stumbling blocks exist when rolling out an application to every available region. I’ve recently stumbled upon one of them when working on bucketAV. Not all EC2 instance families and types are available in all regions.

Here are some interesting facts.

5 Things you should know about the availability of EC2 instance types

• Only 8 instance families are available in all regions: c6g, i3en, i4i, m6g, m6gd, r6g, t3, t4g.
• New instance types are rolling out slowly. For example, i7i was released in April 2025 and is available in 9% of the regions only.
• Even older instance types like m7i, which was released in August 2023, are not availble in all regions yet.
• New regions support only a small subset of all available instance types. For example, ap-east-2 supports only 25 instance families.
• In some regions, not all instance types of an instance family are supported. For example, while the instance family i4i is supported in il-central-1, the instance types i4i.24xlarge and i4i.12xlarge are not.
