Worldwide availability of EC2 instance types

Andreas WittigUpdated 21 Nov 2023

The promise sounds tempting; with AWS, you can roll out your infrastructure in 28 regions worldwide. Indeed, it is an eye-opening moment when rolling out the same infrastructure into multiple regions to serve users in different parts of the world. However, a few stumbling blocks exist when rolling out an application to every available region. I’ve recently stumbled upon one of them when working on bucketAV. Currently, EC2 provides 761 instance types grouped into 116 instance families. But not all of these instance families are available in every region.

Worldwide availability of EC2 instance types

Here are some interesting facts.

4 Things you should know about the availability of instance types

  • Only one region offers all instance types: us-east-1.
  • Only 12 instance families are available in all regions: c5, c5d, i3, i3en, m5, m5d, m6g, r5, r5d, r6g, t3, t4g.
  • New instance types are rolling out slowly. For example, m7i is available only in 21% of all regions.
  • New regions support only a small subset of all available instance types. For example, ap-southeast-4 provides only 13% of all instance families.

Summary

Consider which instance types are available when choosing a region to deploy your workload. If you plan to roll out a workload to many regions in parallel, keep in mind that not all instance types are available in all regions.
